When I was young I didn't set out to become a Counsellor; it is something that gradually evolved and grew alongside my own life-journey.
For many years I never really knew what I wanted to do. I used to enjoy learning languages and spoke French quite well so "the plan" was to go to University and study something vocational with French, but at the time I had other priorities.
Instead I worked in imports/exports for a French company in the UK and then did a whole variety of temp secretarial and admin jobs plus six months working abroad. Eventually I ended up as the PA to the Installations Manager at a double-glazing company. After a couple of years I became pregnant and left work to be a stay-at-home mum to my son. I moved house twice and then gave birth to my daughter, on my son's 4th birthday.
Giving birth inspired me to train to become an Antenatal Teacher, mainly to help new parents feel more empowered to make informed decisions. After nearly 3 years training I qualified in 1998. I have taught antenatal classes to groups and privately ever since. In 2012 I added a hypnobirthing qualfication and offer courses teaching this too.
People have always interested me. I have always been curious about people's motivations, what shapes people to be as they are and whether it is possible for people to change. Personal growth and embracing new challenges is also something I have recognised as taking place in my own life, although not always through conscious choice and not always without a struggle. Looking back to my earlier interest in languages it seems that on some level I have always had an interest in communicating with others, in trying to understand and in being understood.
Following a number of "coincidences" the time felt right to take a 1-year Counselling certificate course. Feeling more confident after completing this, I decided to continue and tackle the two-year Diploma course to qualify as a Counsellor. I am proud to say I qualified with Distinction in 2010 with the University of Winchester Diploma of Higher Education in Counselling (Level 5).
I am passionate about working with people when they are undergoing transition in their lives. I want to help clients to feel empowered to make changes and choices that are right for them. I seek to support, not to instruct.
In addition to my counselling practice and offering various antenatal courses and relaxation classes, I have enjoyed leading some well-received 1-day workshops at a local college for counselling students, exploring creative approaches to counselling.
